Another increase in jobless claims, Governor Ned Lamont’s visit to southeastern Connecticut, and cannabis education from UConn are among the top business news items this morning.

Initial jobless claims last week totaled 744,000, up from 728,000 the week before and a sign that employers continue to cut their workforces even as COVID-19 vaccines roll out and consumer confidence improves. Including emergency unemployment programs set up by the federal government, approximately 18.2 million were receiving jobless benefits as of March 20.
Connecticut
Governor Ned Lamont paid a visit to southeastern Connecticut on Wednesday to promote economic development initiatives in the region, including a planned overhaul of New London’s State Pier. Lamont also discussed state and regional economic issues in a virtual breakfast with the Eastern Connecticut Chamber of Commerce.
With a legislative committee signaling early support for Lamont’s proposal to legalize recreational marijuana in the state, the University of Connecticut is adding online cannabis horticulture courses to complement an introductory course that debuted two years ago. The courses are open to UConn students as well as the general public.
