Job openings in the United States hit a series high of 10.1 million at the end of June, up from 9.5 million in May. The Bureau of Labor Statistics also said that hires and separations both increased, with the quits rate ticking up during the month.
Professional and business services had the strongest gains in job openings, posting 227,000 positions in June. Another 133,000 jobs were posted in retail, with 121,000 added in accommodation and food services.
- Hires increased by 697,000 to 6.7 million, with the strongest gains in retail (291,000) and state and local government education (94,000)
- Separations, which include quits, layoffs, and terminations, increased by 254,000 to 5.6 million, led by a 124,000 increase in separations in professional and business services
- Durable goods manufacturing saw considerable shakeup, posting increases of 36,000 hires, 48,000 separations, and 47,000 quits
