The U.S. Coast Guard’s primary facility for the research, development, testing, and evaluation of solutions to assist the service’s mission, the Coast Guard Research & Development Center (RDC) conducts operational and risk management analyses to determine the feasibility of new technologies. Programs address a variety of areas, including unmanned vehicles, surveillance and reconnaissance abilities, and environmental crisis response. When appropriate, the RDC collaborates with professionals in the public and private sector.

Small businesses specializing in areas of interest to the Coast Guard, such as pollution abatement, marine science, and ship or aircraft technology.

Mission

To pursue and apply new scientific technologies for the maritime environment and provide incremental improvements that strategically transform the way the Coast Guard does business.

Procurement

At any given time, the RDC is working on more than 80 projects to improve the ability of the Coast Guard to fulfill its mission. A development, testing, and evaluation program works to develop or improve technologies, and it leverages partnerships with academia, government agencies, and private industries to achieve success. The programs are typically concentrated on:

  • Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance
  • Environment and Waterways
  • Modeling and Simulation Center of Expertise
  • Surface, including vessels and port security
  • Systems and Unmanned Technology
